The Art Underground: Fantasy Coffins of Ghana

In the coastal communities of southern Ghana, carpenters carve extraordinary coffins in the shapes of fish, airplanes, cocoa pods, eagles, cars, and countless other motifs. Known locally as abebuu adekai-"containers of proverbs"-these objects carry layers of meaning. They honor the dead, affirm family and communal pride, display worldly success, and embody a unique artistry that blends tradition with innovation. Internationally, they are often called "fantasy" coffins, a phrase that captures their spectacle but obscures their depth. The Art Underground takes readers inside this remarkable tradition, from the streets of Accra to the global stage of museums and biennials. Hardcover, 192 pages.
